Transportation for Veterans

With Veterans Day on the horizon, it is important to remember that Americans across the country owe the men and women who bravely stood up in defense of our nation a debt that can never be repaid. Unfortunately, many of the brave Veterans in Polk County continue to lack access to transportation, which prevents them from finding jobs, receiving essential health care services, and restricts access to simple everyday needs such as groceries or daily home supplies.

Fortunately, on a local level, Polk Transit is implementing an innovative public/private partnership to provide access to transportation for Veterans at no cost to them, and no cost to taxpayers. This pilot-program, providing no cost rides to the roughly 60,000 Veterans in Polk County, would be the first of its kind in the nation.

These services would fulfill the sacred promise we have made to those who have sacrificed for our country, and are an example of a local community going above and beyond to change the lives of our heroes in uniform.

My hope is that communities nationwide will follow in the footsteps of Polk Transit and, in similar fashion, honor the service and sacrifice of our Veterans on a local level.
