Ross’ Statement on Judge Neil Gorsuch Supreme Court Confirmation
WASHINGTON, D.C., Apr. 7, 2017 – U.S. Rep. Dennis A. Ross (R-FL-15), Senior Deputy Majority Whip, released the following statement in response to the Senate Confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court:
"The nomination and confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch as our newest Supreme Court Justice is a fantastic move by President Trump and the Senate. Like his predecessor Justice Scalia, Judge Gorsuch is a staunch defender of our Constitution who will protect our freedoms and properly apply the laws of our land without legislating from the bench. For the past eight years, we have seen our Constitution trampled on, taken advantage of, and grossly misapplied for political convenience, but today’s confirmation of Judge Gorsuch puts an end to this. Judge Gorsuch has a strong proven record of defending our religious freedoms, protecting the sanctity of life, upholding states’ rights, and selflessly providing pro bono legal services for those in need. He is a man of conviction, fairness and integrity.
"Senate Democrats’ obstruction of Judge Gorsuch’s confirmation is extremely rare in our nation’s history, especially as prominent Democrats have previously spoken out against Supreme Court filibusters, including President Obama, Senator Chuck Schumer, former Senator Harry Reid and former White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest. Senate Republicans took the necessary steps to confirm Judge Gorsuch in the face of Democrats’ partisan and political opposition. Democrats changed Senate procedure in the past when it was convenient to them, and during the 2016 election, Sen. Reid and Vice Presidential Candidate Tim Kaine went as far as to say Democrats would change the Senate rules to avoid a filibuster of Hillary Clinton’s potential Supreme Court nominations.
"This confirmation is another promise we are keeping to the American people. Judge Gorsuch’s admirable judicial reputation and work ethic speak for themselves and have been proven by his unanimous confirmation to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2006 when he received the support of then-Sens. Obama, Clinton, Biden and Schumer. The judicial branch is the ultimate check on our separation of powers, and as politics have no place in our courts, they should be set aside for the sake of upholding our laws and guaranteeing justice for all. I am thrilled to see this confirmation so we finally can restore our judicial system and protect Americans. I believe Judge Gorsuch will be more than capable of filling this important and revered role, and I congratulate him and his family on this exciting and historic appointment."
