WASHINGTON, D.C., Apr. 14, 2017 – U.S. Rep. Dennis A. Ross (R-FL-15), made the following statement congratulating this year’s winner of the 2017 Congressional Art Competition winner for the 15th Congressional District of Florida, Amber Johnson of Lakeland Christian School:

“The Congressional Art Competition is one of Cindy’s and my favorite aspects of being a Member of Congress, and we look forward to this event every year. It is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talents of so many creative students, as well as connect with and learn from them and their incredible artwork. Every year, I am blown away by the quality of the artwork submitted in this competition. And every year, these students’ commitment and excellence reminds me why it is so important for all of us to support programs like the Congressional Art Competition that promote creative spirit and imaginative problem-solving abilities, which employers even list as one of the top skills they look for in the hiring process.

“I want to congratulate all of the students for their participation and hard work, and Amber Johnson for being awarded this year’s Congressional Art Competition winner for District 15. These students are shining examples of the amazing accomplishments that can be achieved through art programs and education. Their creative minds and abilities are true gifts, and I am thrilled to help drive a vehicle behind showcasing their aptitudes. I would like to thank the School Boards of Polk, Hillsborough and Lake Counties, the Polk Museum of Art, and all those involved in making this memorable event happen. I look forward to seeing Amber’s beautiful artwork in the Capitol, proudly representing our community.”

For 35 years, members of the U.S. House of Representatives have recognized American high school students in each congressional district in the nationwide Congressional Art Competition. Students submit entries to their respective representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their districts and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. The winning artworks are displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol.

The Polk Museum of Art conducts the competition and displays the exhibition for the 15th Congressional District of Florida, which encompasses parts of Polk, Hillsborough and Lake Counties. This year’s competition was a cooperative planning effort between Rep. Ross’ office, the School Boards of Polk, Hillsborough and Lake Counties and the Polk Museum of Art. Corporate underwriting for the exhibition was provided by Joy and Michael Martin, Burnetti Children’s Foundation, the Law Offices of Burnetti P.A. and Southwest Airlines.
