WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 15, 2016 – U.S. Rep. Dennis A. Ross (FL-15), Senior Deputy Majority Whip, released the following statement after voting to pass H.R. 6297, the Iran Sanctions Extension Act, which extends the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for 10 years:

“I proudly voted for the Iran Sanctions Extension Act today because allowing the ISA to expire would compound the damage already done by the president’s dangerous Iran Nuclear Deal. Letting the ISA expire would send a wrong message that the U.S. will no longer oppose Iran’s destructive role in the Middle East.

“Since it was first passed twenty years ago, the ISA has been at the center of the U.S. response to the threat posed by the Iranian rogue regime. The ISA remains critical to U.S. efforts to counter the full range of Iran’s malicious activity, and must be kept in place so the next Administration has the critical tools it needs to combat Iran’s unconventional weapons programs, ballistic missile development, and support for terrorism that were not suspended as part of the Iran Nuclear Deal.

“The legislation passed today provides clear statutory authority to snap-back many of the most powerful sanctions on Iran’s energy industry if the country rushes toward a nuclear weapon. It also gives Congress, not the Executive Branch, final say on when Iran gets permanent sanctions relief. The U.S. will not stand idly by as Iran funnels weapons and assistance to its terrorist proxies to prop up the murderous Assad regime that threatens our nation and its allies, including Israel. You have my word I will continue to support legislation like today’s that puts America’s safety first.”
